Should I build or not?

August 6th, 2009 by admin

Costliness is usually the first word associated with green home building. I partially agree with that idea. I think that many times, people get so wrapped up in going green that they get rid of perfectly good stuff to get “better” stuff. They are trying, but don’t think it through.

I don’t think green home building should include only new construction. Greenness should be promoted in your current home. For example, insulate your home in a better manner to reduce your fuel consumption in the winter and thus reduce your heating costs. Yes, we should build any new construction to green specifications, but so many times I see perfectly good buildings wasted to construct “greener” ones. For example, in my town, one major supermarket went out of business and a different major supermarket came into town. The building that the first one was in was perfectly fine, relatively new, etc., but the new supermarket had to demolish acres and acres of trees to build a new plaza next to the old one. Now they are constantly advertising their greenness. Hmm…

My point here is that it is usually more efficient to improve existing structures than to waste them and build new ones. Green home building is not building a brand new home. Green home building means building greenness in your existing one.

Building Homes on Green Principles

Green Home building from an ecological fad has become a necessity. The National Association of Homebuilders headquartered in Washington D.C. has formulated detailed guidelines for green home building. This has come as a step forward in making green home building the Norm and traditional building methods obsolete because the NAHB is the trade association that advocates procedures to making housing an important aspect of National Policy. There are six important points under the NAHB guidelines that contractors are expected to follow in green home building.

The lot preparation and design should minimally impact vegetation and soil. Green home building are buildings that minimize construction waste and maximize easy maintenance All mechanical systems, light fittings and appliances used in a green home buildings should be energy efficient and use renewable energy. Conserving and recycling water in a green home building ensures lower utility bills for the homeowner. Proper insulation and ventilation makes the homeowner save on medical and energy bills. The NAHB requires that its members teach the value of green home building to homeowners to promote healthier and happier households.

Principles for building green houses

When you plan on building a green house, you will have made a conscientious decision to lead a healthy and earth conscious lifestyle. Building a green house involves using material that are easily restored and recycled. Natural light and natural ventilation should be part of building a green house so that energy from fossil fuels is not used. Air leaks are plugged and damp is prevented from seeping into walls by careful insulation when building a green house. . Conserving water by using low flow plumbing fixtures and designing the piping to recycle water is an essential part of green building Building a green house is an expensive proposition but gives long term savings in energy and overall good health.

Green home construction is the new age style of construction using concepts that are as old as the hills. The focus of green home construction is to live in harmony with the surroundings. Artificiallly heated and cooled homes suffer the aftermath of unhealthy fumes and emissions and people are increasingly turning to natural elements like wind and solar energy as healthier options of heating and cooling.

Steel and glass that form the façade of many modern constructions have gone green because recycled steel from salvage yards and building demolition sites and glass from old glass bottles are used. Sites Particle board made from recycled material is used for partition screens and furniture. People who prefer green home constructions prefer to walk with recycled flooring material like rubber from car tires and eco linoleum underfoot.

Stucco and straw bale walls are an excellent warm and eco friendly option to the conventional concrete walls. The air one breathes in a green home is good for health because of the non toxic substances like paints used on the walls. Green home construction is not a cheap method of construction but it gives residents long term benefits of good health, energy bill savings and low maintenance costs.

Green building is the new cool thing. And I have a few thoughts on this topic to share. The ideas behind building green and green architecture have been around for a long long time. But there is serious new interest in the topic today that there wasn’t before. What’s changed is the financial equation on the idea of building green. Thankfully (my bias showing through now), it has gotten much more expensive to heat your house. And having the price of gas for your car also go up has also gotten people to think more.

I believe this to be a great step forward in the environmental movement. Without the business case, you are just trying to make people change behavior only on their political or ethical views. So it will be interesting to see what this does now that the dollar is behind it. In some ways, I’m predicting that we return to the 70’s where building green and saving energy was in the mainstream discussion and media.

Today homes built with green construction make a statement of being socially correct and socially responsible. One popular method of green construction is using modular ready to build material made in green conscious factories specifically for green buildings. Green construction involves construction of buildings without destroying nature.

Green construction therefore involves using bricks, straw bale and building material that can be replaced or restored. Bricks and straw bale that can be restored are used in preference to irreplaceable .steel and concrete. Plumbing fittings that can provide less water outflow and manage wastewater for irrigation are important for green construction. Rain harvesting features help save water which is regarded as a dwindling life sustaining resource.

Green construction uses no artificial means of temperature control and fresh air provides ventilation improving the quality of health of those who live or work in the building. All green construction material need to be durable and the maintenance of equipment used should be minimal. Interiors use low toxic paint and few or no carpets that attract less allergens.

Plastic lumber used in green construction are climate resistant and environmentally friendly. Lumber from fast growing trees that can be easily propagated are used in green construction. Houses built with green construction are all weather houses that can weather any climate change.

Green Home Construction … A Ready Reckoner

A well-designed green home construction requires consideration of several factors, which must be incorporated in the initial structuring stages. In a green home, use of recyclable material is very important from the point of view of conservation. This could include using high fly ash content cement instead of normal cement. Wood salvaged from old buildings and reengineered wood can be used in constructing a green home. Green features work better when included in the initial construction phase. This also involves installation of a drip irrigation system for landscaping instead of the usual sprinkler system. A rainwater harvesting plant is best effective when installed in the initial design stage. Pathways, drive ways should be made of permeable paving so that rainwater can seep through the soil.

Using Forest Stewardship Council (SFC) certified wood for all wooden fittings in the house is favorable to a green house construction. Green home constructions aim at cleaner indoor environment by making use of no/low formaldehyde interior paints. Installing solar heaters and photovoltaic panels helps conserve electricity and a lower utilities bill. It is better to fit light colored roofs than dark colored roofs because they are more reflective and thus reduce buildup of heat inside the house. Light colored roofs do not undergo as much thermal expansion as dark colored roofs and hence last longer.

Green Home Construction holistically handles both fixed as well as movable items in a house. It is best to use recycled wood furniture for the house interiors. Garden furniture can be made out of recycled plastic, which is easily available in the market. Using cork or bamboo flooring instead of traditional hardwood flooring helps greening the house. Avoid using vinyl linoleum, natural linoleum is a better choice. Leak proof ducting helps in conservation of energy. It has been estimated that leaks in ducting cause a loss over 10% of the energy used. Using low volume flush toilets and fitting flow reducers to faucets and shower heads helps cut down 40% of the water volume and nobody will even notice the difference. Formaldehyde free wall and ceiling insulation help reduce sickness. One good material for insulation is cellulose insulation made out of recycled paper.

In a green home construction, effective use is made of low emissive double paned windows. The advantages of double paned windows are that they help in providing insulation as well as reduction of noise. Insulation can further be enhanced using wooden frames for housing windows. A piping jacket helps reduce heat loss. These guidelines should come in handy if you are planning to build a green home.

To save on energy bills green home construction should be adopted when you construct a building. The EPA gives energy star certification to construction material that reduce energy consumption specifying what can be used in green home construction. All Energy Star certified products reduce water and energy consumption by 10-50% and are the material certified for use in green home construction.

Using low VOC (volatile organic compound ) paints that contain no lead or formaldehyde makes green home construction good for your health. Sealing your home from damp using insulation in green home construction prevents mold from setting in and affecting your lungs. . Green home construction uses light fixtures that emit light but not heat. The upfront cost of green home construction material was high but people found that in the long run the user saves on medical and energy bills.

Increased demand for green home construction has made the cost of green housing material on par with other construction material. Mass production of green home construction material that is fabricated and brought on site and put together has helped reducing the costs of green housing material. Green home construction saves money, saves energy and saves you from bad health.

Green Home designs are home designs that synchronize with nature and the surrounding landscape. Green Home designs encourage the use of locally available and naturally occurring building material like recycled rubber, lumber, concrete and drywall bricks.wavessearch.com

Green home designs suggest the use of durable, easy to maintain and fire resistant construction material. Air conditioning and central heating are unnecessary in a green home design because by using proper insulation techniques the interior is warm in winter and cool in summer. The law forbids the use of lead paint and formaldehyde in homes and green home designs do not encourage their use. Green home designs are designs that expect the home to have power savers like compact fluorescent lamps, dimmers and thermostats.

Cool in summer and warm is winter is the hallmark of a green home because it makes maximum use of natural sunlight and fresh air. A green home design is a federal and state tax saver because both federal and state tax deductions are available for energy saving home designs. The best part of a green home design is that the home has immense possibilities of resale success with more buyers opting for health and well being assured by a green home design.

Big news this week on climate change and policy The current administration decided to acknowledge that there was evidence of climate change. I see this as very big for the climate change camp. Although, it is less clear what policy is really going to change as a result of this. The reaction from the climate activists was negative because they want to see more action.
This is understandable. But, this is a step forward. Prior to this week’s statements, the republicans were saying that there is no real consensus on the climate change debate. Nothing could have been further from the truth. So, in that sense I’m glad to see that the republicans are finally catching up with reality.
